it's not the matter of conforming to the western society or not, the fact is that when they don't smile it gives them a more serious attitude to fashion. if they smile it would make the models look like those typical girls that just want to go on the runway to be a beauty queen...smiling is more relevent to events like beauty pageants...!!(^_^)

nooooo have you gone back to vn lately? if you go to the big shopping malls some of the people are pretty tall like 5'7 or 5'8 (girls), that's standard height for models here in the US now too so it's not that different .. the younger people are much taller now how tall r u? don't hate

I think it's probably just the cultural diversity? Because I'm guessing the Vietnamese think they are model standard, and that's why they are in the show. I don't think there are many 'pretty, tall' girls in terms of the American appeal...? Like for me personally, I think 90% of the European models are pretty ugly, but that's just my opinion.
