I agree, I'm a liberal but also like guns. An assault rifle ban is not what's needed, but a tracking system for gun ownership. Similar to how you have to prove you won a car, you should have to prove you own a gun, so that you can't simply sell the gun and that's that. If this were done, say ona monthly basis, that you had to report that you still were in possesion of a gun or sold it to someone else, than it would help keep guns off the street.

The problem with registering guns on a national level is that the government is one of the entities that guns are supposed to protect against; if the government were to become tyrannical and had access to all gun owners it could wipe out any resistnce much easier than if it had no "list". Guns were meant to be a last resort if the checks and balance system failed.
