The US Navy's Electromagnetic Rail Gun that is under development at NSWC Dahlgren in Virginia. This is a prototype to demonstrate the technology of the rail gun for use on the future DDG-1000 class of Navy ships. This clip is from the show FutureWeapons on the Discovery Channel. It aired in April 2007.

This technology is experimental. Many technologies you know and love owe themselves to the military and ended up being leaked into the civilian market after it was no longer a prototype. Right now such theoretical uses for magnetism is already being researched by labs within civilian and military groups. I guess killing people "in theory" creates luxuries for you in reality. It is not any such waste, and that is an insult to people who stake their life on the success of their creations.

There are practical applications with this now in the commercial market. The Linear Induction Motor is similar to the rail gun technology. LIMs have being used for some high speed roller coasters for over 10 years. So there is some commercial practicality for this stuff, not just for weapons. :)

Yes, I know that most of our technology comes from the military, and that is my point. If people want actually live in peace, we need to stop building shit for the military and do it for the world. That only makes a little sense. Scenario 1, we make weapons and eventually all die in a mass world war, OR Scenario 2, we step up and be the big mature boys we claim to be, and lead by example, and stop making weapons. If Scenario 2 works then all is well, while Scenario 1 is doomed to fail eventually. Even though its doomed to fail, you still think Scenario 1 is better? Cmon man. I get what you are saying but I am a huge believer in humans acting according to their surroundings and society, not that some of us are evil by birth. I have never seen an evil infant... people aren't born with a lust for power, its taught to them by their surroundings. SO with that said, this is why I think it is more beneficial in the long run to advocate peace with life saving technology, not life taking technology. I think that a positive example would only help the world.

Children lie out of fear and fear is a basic instinct.. its part of fight or flight, yet the child is uneducated. Uneducated (broad term where in my mind I mean unwise as to what is important in life) humans fight over what is scarce... money, health, food, shelter, stupid materialistic possessions. Find way to get rid of scarcity and there is no reason to fight, lie, kill, steal, etc. Instead we develop weapons to induce this scarcity, rather than finding ways to solve the problem.
