Remember, this is just SIX MONTHS after 9/11. In response to a reporters question, President Bush tells the world that he is "truly not that concerned" with catching the man who murdered 3,000 Americans just six months and two days earlier because "we've marginalized him."

Back in 1986, during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the CIA secretly funded a group of Islamic extremists and trained them in how to commit acts of terrorism against their Soviet oppressors. It worked, and the Soviets were driven away. The extremists were led by Osama Bin Laden. He was so grateful for his training that he thought it would be fun to use it against us many years later. When the CIA trained him, he was even given an alias, "Tim Osman."

After the Soviet invasion was over, the Reagan Administration left Bin Laden with the rest of his CIA funding and never looked back. The Administration of George Herbert Walker Bush was the same, never thinking to check on their creation. By the time Clinton came into power, Bin Laden was a force to be reckoned with. To this day, Clinton came closer to killing Bin Laden than any other President. Bin Laden isn't a member of the CIA as ZekeVoltage suggests, but he was definitely created by them.

Well, let's see. Bush was freely elected by the American people and made the decision to go to war with the support of both Democrats and Republicans. That's how we let Bush happen. Hitler rose to power by murdering his political enemies in Germany, delivering powerful charismatic speeches, rebuilding Germany's infrastructure, economy, and war machine following WWI, and dehumanizing the Jews with a well coordinated propaganda campaign that allowed him to seize their wealth and take their lives.

Clinton was handed Bin Laden on a platter by the Sudanese and refused to act. Both Saddam and Bin Laden were relics of American attempts to combat Soviet expansionism (along with Iranian influence in the middle east following the Islamic Revolution that brought the ayatollahs to power) during the Cold War. You can say it was wrong to use such men but hindsight is 20/20 and in truth they were simply necessary (and the lesser of two) evils.

They were/are bad men whose power and brutality were used to advance our interests over those of our arguably more dangerous Soviet enemies. They were bad men given to a life of violence and brutality before they ever had dealings with America or the CIA. The culture of oppression, intolerance, and violence that dominates much of the Muslim world created them. The CIA simply sharpened their swords and unleashed them against our Soviet and Iranian enemies.

That, sir, is a total, complete fallacy. The truth is that the Sudan offered to arrest bin Laden and turn him over to Saudi Arabia. For ten weeks Clinton tried to persuade the Saudis to take bin Laden. They refused to do so for fear of fundamentalist backlash, and the FBI & Justice Department determined there was not sufficient evidence at that time to indict him in U.S. courts.

So you can justify every atrocity committed by the America and the CIA if it helped us against the Soviets. Well the fact is that in the long run, none of those things played a really major role in destroying the Union. It was their own failed system that did that.
Even if it was necessary to create Bin Laden, it still doesn't excuse Reagan and Bush Sr. for ignoring his threat after the Soviets left Afghanistan. But alas, they never did like to clean their own diapers.

Roonalwazlib, There is no shortage of educated idiots. I worked retail management and saw enough educated fools to start an army. I lost count of the amount of doctors, lawyers, physicist, etc who can't even figure out the Fisher Price like touch screen interface at the local photo lab. A degree is by no means a sign of intelligence. For some it just means they have a memory good enough to get them trough the next test. Logical thinking and common sense is the true measure not a piece of paper.
