The manufacturer is Pace. Your tip is oxidized (surface contamination). An oxidized tip cannot achieve "thermal transfer" and solder will not adhere to an oxidized tip. If you use the basic rule of tinning your tip, you would overcome this problem.

Very impressive, I was scare to buy some chip small like that because of the soldering, now I am more confident that I will able to do it! Thanks for the video!

Of course you can do it. I have confidence in you. Anyone can do this. The techniques are very user friendly. Good luck.

Thanks, Are you using the 4C tips? Before I buy the tips I prefer to ask to the expert :)

You will see the tip that I use almost exclusively if you watch my other demo on surface mount fine pitch I.C. where I rework a biometric I.C. I feel the best tips are the small and large hoof tips. I never use conicals, chisels or points.

You soldered those chips better and faster with an iron than I ever could with a full hot air reflow station! Holy crap!

I believe there to be no faster technique which consistently produces Class 3 results over vertical drag soldering. One trick I use to achieve serious speed is to tin my gull wing leads by drag soldering the leads. I could share tricks with you in SMT soldering that would blow your mind. I guarantee it.
My best to you.

Mr.Ducky: Thank you. The "art" of Surface Mount Technology is an art that you are fully capable of perfecting, with the right teacher, techniques, equipment, etc... It goes far beyond this. View my other demos and you will see more. Remember, anyone can do this with the proper instruction.

Great technique. I am more confident of dealin with SMT after watching your videos. Congratulations, this is very good hand soldering!

You have god like skills. Like magic that solder flowed. Now that is what I am talking about when I mean drag soldering. Get on the IPC board and set good standards. Time for you to move pass this level in the game.

Your comment is very encouraging. Thank you. I am in the process of developing the format for an advanced surface mount video. This time it will be primarily on horizontal drag soldering and point to point. For me to move past this level in the game, I must share my gifts and experience by personally training others. I can teach anyone to do this and much more. My best to you! John Gammell, Certified IPC Trainer IPC J-Standard-001, A-610, A-600 & A-620

Excellent Video, I've been looking to repair my G4 video card and all I've found was vids of people using weird techniques. I was curious how multiple connections were resoldered. I hope this helps. I'll let you know.

I have never soldered homemade PCB's. I would recommend that you solder them horizontally using point to point instead of drag soldering.

WOW - That was amazing - I was totally obsessed with electronics from the age of about 4 to 24 and pretty much gave it away for software b'cos of the SMT and the expensive kit needed to solder same - If only I could have tried this - I would wick/point2point and damage PCBs sometimes
Amazing. What kind ... ( 3 months ago by babaloey)
Amazing. What kind of prep work was done on the pads or leads, for example you wrote that you pre-tin the leads? Was flux (besides the flux in the solder) used in this video?
I pre-tin the leads ... ( 3 months ago by jkgamm041)
I pre-tin the leads on the majority of SOIC's and QFP's for several reasons. 1) I prep the leads with isopropol alcohol to remove contaminants and tin to counter any oxidation; 2) Once I place my I.C and my orientation is correct, my leads are tinned. All I have to do it tack each corner and I need no further solder until I'm going to do all the leads; 3) Soldering pre-tinned leads makes soldering much faster and easier. The flux is Kester 951 No Clean Low Solid and I use it frequently.

Dakota County Technical College - Customized Training Dept., Rosemount, MN. Speak with the Customized Training Director, Larry Raddatz at 651-423-8276. You don't want to learn the vertical techniques. I'll teach you horizontal drag soldering, point to point, hot air rework including hot air pencil soldering, low heat/low melt component removal with minimal thermal exposure using Zephyrtronics bench top systems (convective) and conductive with the best, JBC soldering equipment.
