wrong. those bands all have great guitarists [metallica is my fav band and i love kirk]. but it takes a lot more skill to write stuff like this, than it does to thrash out a few fast notes. if you were a decent musician, you would know.

It's about style and Knopfler's style is very melodic. You can't do emo using 1/64th notes, which Clapton also said decades ago. Doing that sort of melodic flow with a flatpick is also very difficult.
