Asia is far too diverse a continent ethnically to define all of its people racially as "Asians". Oriental is preferable because it means "east" and so applies to Eastern Asians. Asia is composed of many Russians, Israelis, Pakistanis, Indians, Turks, etc. Should we define them all racially as "Asians"? That was a rhetorical question. It just doesn't work.

Darksaw5--I have traveled all over the world and there is far from a consensus about whether one from Eastern Asia prefers "Asian" or "Oriental". Asian is your preference. I get that. But, you speak only for yourself. If one is describing an individual with ethnic roots in Eastern Asia, Oriental is far more concise. An "Asian" could be one of several different races. It's woefully inadequate. By the way, it's spelled "Pomona", not "Pamona".
