There are no 'graphics' here. It's all done using models and lighting. I agree with you though. Modern movies use far too much CGI. Things which could be done with real action.

Sure CGI is great, but this movie still holds it's own pretty good considering it's 26+ years old!
Everything about this movie was so far ahead of it's time. Still not sure time as actually caught up to it yet either.

Blade Runner is ... ( 1 month ago by Feuyaer)
Blade Runner is quite simply, irrefutably, the most beautiful to look-at film ever made. It's almost impossible to think these vistas are visual trickery and MINIATURES! The sense of depth, grandeur, and colossal, grinding industry is fully realized in every city-shot. This is my favourite film of all time and that will NEVER change - one can watch the film without sound and be amazed, and likewise listen only to the sountrack and get the same effect. Masterful and never to be surpassed.

I agree - if you take a look at the whole picture, visual effects shots with CGI always look just "off". Like the brain tells you it's not real, but you can't put your finger on why. When miniatures are involved, there's so much more classical craftsmanship involved, and with all visuals being on-camera and real, everything just looks "right". Maybe not 100% real, but legitimate and real in a way CGI will never be.

I swear to God every time I see this and the opening of the film, my breathing slows nearly to a halt and I become totally relaxed and full of awe. Sweet jesus is this ever a great film to simply watch and be in awe of. Never has a dystopian future been so inviting. Gah I keep coming back to this same video...

I'm pretty sure CGI wasn't around in 1982. Unless your talking about the blue computer screen at 1:54. Anything visually stunning here was either on-camera effects, photo-effects, or hand-drawn animation. Unless they used a scanimate, but it just doesn't have that distinct scanimate flavor.

Agreed. CGI still sucks today, not because it isn't technically impressive, but because it causes a conflict in the brain's perception of the image. Just look at this film and Scott's other masterpiece Alien (and its sequel) to understand why the old-skool techniques, with all their flaws, just *feel* right. See also 2001 ASO.

Spot-on, my friend. The soundtrack is amazing as well. It's eerie how Vangelis could be that in-touch with the movie.

Definately. Perhaps one of the reasons is that it was real objects smoke and flames they filmed, albeit in minature on 70mm film. CGI today tries to recreate what they started out with--reality.
Also they had to be restrained by budget and time. So, the city here looks better than the 'city' in Attack of the clones, which had too much going on.
