People say Clapton's guitar work hasn't evolved since the 60's. That may be true of his electric playing, but his acoustic playing is more amazing now and better than it's ever been.

The Domino's version etal Layla etc were mixed in the studio out of 8 or 9 guitar parts. Eric nor Duane (if still alive) could duplicate what was done in the studio then. This vid is one guitar. And Claptons playing has advanced over the years to many different styles.

Neither Eric nor Duane ever duplicated their solos. Every time out was a new take. Including this clip. As a stylist, Eric is basically the same player. As an artist, he's tried on many hats over 40 years.

Layla was a studio track. It was because of the many takes that were mixed together that made the final version. No way to duplicate even on a remix. Pretty easy for Eric to duplicate any of his other work in the studio or out. Not Layla. As an example if he wanted he could duplicate the studio take of Wonderful Tonight each and every time if he so chose. He does not, which is great.

Yup. "Studio track" but really a jam, as the lead-in suggests. Like most good jams, it's expansive, exhales, inhales, blows smoke rings, over 9+ minutes. Chock full of creativity and great runs. OTOH, some things he can do in his sleep, by rote, start to finish.

It's always wonder to me what people really want from Clapton. After all, it's hard to keep a prolific music career for as long as he has. What is worse then: evolving over the course of 40 years or sounding the same for 40 years?
