Very nice video. Impressive. I, too wish that that series had taken off. I liked that fact that ST was cerevral. TOS needed to be, riding on on the coat tails of "Lost in Space" (Oh, the pain, the pain,)
From a Hollywood standpoint, yes, they needed to have some action. But Gene was trying to show us a new age of mankind who, unlike us, don't want to fight. I believe in that dream.

That's not the Phase II Enterprise. Nice job on the CG work though. The real Phase II Enterprise looked like the bastard child of the original enterprise and an Imperial Star Destroyer. Phase II did not have sets built either. It never made it out of pre-production. I have a book that shows the first 30 years of concept artwork and it includes a lot of artwork from Phase II. Personally, I like this better then the real Phase II Enterprise.

First off, thank you. I have to disagree with your assertion, unfortunately. This is, indeed, based on the Phase II model designed by Matt Jefferies for the new series. Check out "The Art of Star Trek" to see the shots of the model being built for the series. (I even included a shot of said model being made in the video.) The version you're referring to was Ralph McQuarrie's concept for the Phase II "Enterprise". Thanks again!

Nice to see this design realized! I think there are some pages missing from 3vil Superman's book... BTW, isn't the McQuarrie design in the "Enterprise" opening sequence? WTF is it doing there?

"Light year isn't a ... ( 2 weeks ago by BrazilianGaucho)
"Light year isn't a measurement of time, but distance." I know that. It's the distance covered by light in the time of one year. But when I said "design went ahead several light years in the 1980s" the expression was purely metaphorical. I meant design went very *far* in the 1980s, much farther than before. "Far" refers to distance, hence the use of "light year," which also refers to distance. As a metaphor, I meant neither time nor distance, and this is not to be taken so literally.

No problem. To be honest, people don't always get my metaphors, or perhaps this one was lost in translation. Come to think of it, it made more sense in Portuguese.

Also, it should be noted that Sets were built, costumes made or in the process of being made (James Cawley has purchased a majority of the costumes in various stages of completion for use in his Phase II endeavour) and that the show was about 2 to 3 weeks from Principal Photography when it was decided to make a film. There is even test footage in the Engine Room set. Most of the sets were reworked for TMP, and in Trek 2, the Engine itself became the Girders of the Regula 1 lab Balcony.

Obviously they took most of the design for the movie, but of course changed the main dish array - for the better I think.

Yes, that was origionaly designed by Ken Adam as a refit enterprise for a movie to be named "planet of the titans", it never got off the ground and it was decided to go with a series. It actually was never even considered for phase II.
