Actually, in its ... ( 2 weeks ago by Pickinbuddy)
Actually, in its most primitive form as a gourd with a skin--it wasn't...but after the total re-design of the instrument, it is.
Native Americans also made their own percussion instruments as well as wind instruments--it happened on all continents with all respective indigineous peoples...
It's amazing to follow how these things evolve into what we have today, ain't it?

What's so wrong ... ( 1 week ago by TraeBuckner)
What's so wrong about it? The history of the banjo is WAY older than the tradition of bluegrass music. What you see here is called REAL entertainment! The bluegrass musicians these days have forgotten about making it fun. It's the most important thing to me. Most modern BG bands stand there like a bump on a log and take it all way too seriously. If you are playing for a crowd then a big part of your job is to entertain them and Grandpa Jones did this better than just about anyone!
No, It came over ... ( 3 days ago by bailbondsm)
No, It came over w3ith the slaves, but it is the closes t thing to a true American instruent that we have. It was originaly fashioned from a gourd, with the skin covering coming from a possum, a goat, or even a dog. It then cme to be developed and fashioned by Ameicans into the instrument that we know and love today Even up into the advent of the 20th Century, it was considered a black instrument.
