´s Marble Index LP (rereleased with Desert Shore as Nico; The Frozen Borderline)o. Nico wrote the sohg and plays harmonium , but it was Cale who arranged, composed and plays all other instruments not only on this track but on the whole album.

This is such a fantastic performance. I think this is when Cale is often at his best, when it is just him and a piano. Fragments really shows that but I suppose it just makes him more easy on the ear... And I don't think he always wants to go for that!

this should come with a warning label!! i am always moved by john cale, but his performance of this song, and cohen's hallelujah...i can't even express the impact. a permanent pinnacle life experience, never forgotten.

This song is absolutely so melancholy and sad, and Cale really brings it out. it is heart-wrenching and dark, beautiful and depressing. the Nico version is wonderful, but a bit "harsh" wheras this Cale version is more plaintive and devastating. It sounds much more beautiful with the piano.

shrn666, Yeah, this is wonderful, he seems to be the only one the V.U. that appreciated Nico - and his vrsn. of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" is amazing!! I didn't know John could sing like that - beautiful! - re: "expressing the impact" some things can't be expressed in 'words' fully, but I nonetheless know exactly what you mean.

Hauntingly beautiful. What a joy it must be to be able to play piano like that AND sing at the same time. In my opinion, Cale is a rare musical genius.
