This is a spectacular song ; lyrics , music ,sentiment....the while package and the fact that Jerry 'pulled out all the stops ' on this one in his arrangement and delivery ,attests to that.....and that boy could sing too.

I will always watch anything with Jerry on it.
I first heard him in 1966 on "Tupelo Mississippi Flash" - from that time I was hooked on him. I have been a fan ever since and got to meet him twice over the years and saw him in concert in 1982 in Georgia. He gave me a Gator belt buckle which I still own to this day and have many photos of him - plus two of me and Jerry together! Great memories.

This song was never ... ( 1 week ago by yield51)
This song was never meant to be a country western song. That is why Steve Goodman proposed that Arlo Guthrie perform it. He could have approached Conway Twitty or George Jones who were much more popular than Arlo Guthrie, but this song needs to be performed with a humble voice and a subtle guitar. Neither of which Jerry Reed had. It may have been one of Jerry's favorite songs to listen to, but he should have left it at that. This was completely butchered.

on the contrary i find this to be my favorite version of the song, having heard about 12 diferent ones. the only part i didnt exactly like was the "goodmorning america how are you" but i REALLY like the part after "but i'll be gone 500 miles when the day is done" he does have a humble voice and guitar. he could have made it 50 times faster and just overplayed it to death, but he didnt. he did the song justice, which evidently you cant see.

all things are subjective. that being said this is the only version of this song that gives me the chills. jerry DID NOT butcher this song. plus if you want to hear the country version listen to willie's. this is pure gold. jerry garcia , jerry reed and albert king - the only guitarist who matter

I totally agree with the part after "but i'll be gone 500 miles when the day is done"
Jerry did this version in the key of A. The riff he added there is a four step chromatic drop to the root. So the chords are C B Bflat A. and to get the full effect you have to play a high A note with each chord. It gives a very sweet melencholy feel. Good stuff!
