| James Thurber protested what Sam Goldwyn had done to his perfect litle short story, to no avail. But he DID keep Sam from making an overblown version of "The Catbird Seat" by aborting the deal to sell him the rights to THAT one. And what happened when Goldwyn turned J.D. Salinger's brilliant short story "Uncle Wiggly In Coonnecticut" into a soap opera/weeper called "My Foolish Heart" (1950)? Salinger felt so burned by that deal, he never sold the rights to ANY of his stories to Hollywood again. |
