Video Description:
The worst accident in motor racing history happened at the 1955 running of the 24 hours of Le Mans. A collision between a Mercedes and an Austin-Healy sent the Mercedes' engine, hood and steering assembly in to the crowd. Nearly 80 spectators died instantly.

The crash occured because they had no priovision for drivers to see the pit signals before they got there, hence MANY drivers diving from the outside of the track to the pits, including Levegh.
If anything, the ACO should have been accountable as Hawthorn was just doing as he was trained to do as a driver, just like all the others. Oh and if you'd just won the most gruelling race in the world and had little knowledge of the crash, you'd be smiling too. Moron.

I don't think that Hawthorn intended to provoce a crash of Leveghs MB-300 SLR. But he did it! Due to lack of attention perhaps, and normally he should have been disqualified. Unfortunately it needs a lot of time to investigate the real guilty guy of an accident, much more than the race endures. Thus he could maintain his title. BTw even schuhmacher could do this when he won his first championship in 1994.

The ironic thing that came out of this was MB
didn't race there again until the 80s.Also,Mike Hawthorne was one of 4 men to win Le Mans and the F1 world title.The other 3 were Phil Hill,Jochen Rindt,and Graham Hill.
Graham also won at Indy.
