The worst accident in motor racing history happened at the 1955 running of the 24 hours of Le Mans. A collision between a Mercedes and an Austin-Healy sent the Mercedes' engine, hood and steering assembly in to the crowd. Nearly 80 spectators died instantly.

The crash occured because they had no priovision for drivers to see the pit signals before they got there, hence MANY drivers diving from the outside of the track to the pits, including Levegh.
If anything, the ACO should have been accountable as Hawthorn was just doing as he was trained to do as a driver, just like all the others. Oh and if you'd just won the most gruelling race in the world and had little knowledge of the crash, you'd be smiling too. Moron.
didn't race there again until the 80s.Also,Mike Hawthorne was one of 4 men to win Le Mans and the F1 world title.The other 3 were Phil Hill,Jochen Rindt,and Graham Hill.
Graham also won at Indy.
