This is a prime example of satire towards Hollywood's hero ending. Good defeats evil. Here good is evil and evil is evil and only the innocent stand in between.

Sure as fuck don't. CGI killed most of imagination and message in movies to day. You only find a handful of movies today with this kind of character development, Half Nelson, There Will Be Blood, Before The Devil Knows Your Dead. Nothing on caliber with this Mean Streets, Raging Bull, Network, or Lawrence of Arabia.

Who's to say there wasn't? Most people don't understand this movie's ending... Isn't it strange how he shoots all these bad guys, and walks away without a trial. How Cybil Shepard's character just connects with him at the end. How his friends seem nicer.
He died in the shoot-out. He's dead in the end. His character stands for something. He isn't right, or wrong. He just had the belief those pimps had to die, and he had to save her, even if he dies. The chaotic last shot seals it.

yeah definately!! I always thought that the end was just a fantasy, a dream or whatever you'd want to call it.. He died in the shoot out, without doubt he lost too much blood to survive that (imo) and to bump into betsy too - it's all a fantasy ending!

No, according to wikipedia, you're right. I stand corrected. However, sometimes a painter paints something, and meant to express something, however it comes across as something else to others.
He was clearly going for something artistic, and whenever you do that, you should never reveal your intent, IMO. I will still watch it, and think of MY ending, as I feel it's more suiting, and makes more sense in a real-world situation.
