Badass & beautiful! No ship before or since will ever match the perfect design of this one. (And judging by the look of JJ's Enterprise, that'll never change.) Long live the *REAL* USS Enterprise!

Such a beautifully realised scene...such perfect, moving and poetic music. I agree GregGeorge747...the most handsome Enterprise ever...JJ's isn't a fig on this one. Here was the future as Gene envisaged it...A utopia I'm sad to say we will never see. Once there was hope...Apollo, Kennedy, etc. Now there is fear and the stench of the end of times. So sad...opportunity lost.

Great music. Good to see it on the big screen then, after many years of disappointment in looking for a comeback. Some great effects and scenes. Triumphs there, but also a lot of boredom.
"A" on making comeback. Overall, a "B." - - In my opinion.

not to mention, but if the new trailer has the real ship, then it will have that cool blue light behind the deflector dish. I like that blue light

No, I am inclined to disagree - this future is by no means lost. Look at all the achievements that have been made since the film was made - more than in any other period of history. The actions you take now will ultimately shape this future - which could be as simple as a small donation to any field of science.

When it comes to 'flying saucers', there are no more iconic spacecraft than that of the Enterprise (up to this A model) and the Millennium Falcon. Love to see both of them doing their thing.

They draw the connection in this scene between how much kirk loved the ship you can see it in his eyes. Who wouldn't want to be in the captains chair and say take us out? :)

I remember standing in line Dec.1979 for the premier,I thought that my chest would burst! When they got to this scene, the excitement of seeing this refit of Enterprise was unbelievable. Yes the critics said the movie was long and boring in parts like this scene, but for a true fan, it was well worth it, to see the Enterprise reborn after being off NBC for 10 years in syndication and all new now. It fed a hunger that we all had, thats why we wrote Paramount all those letters. My fave Enterprise.
Not the best movie ... ( 6 days ago by ruemiser)
Not the best movie of the series. II, III, IV, and VI were the best movies in my opinion. Gene Roddenbery had never produced a movie prior to this. There was not enough character development. Redesign of the enterprise was nice. They milked this storyline too much. They got back to the basics of Kirk, Spock and McCoy after this. This was the basis of Star Trek. Those Three characters.

The problem is the audience People want violence action this is a different kind of Star Trek movie about meaning asking fundamental questions of how am I and what is my place in the universe? and as Spock said is there nothing more?

I don't think the Star Trek audience want violence per say. Mostly Star Trek works best back then with the three roles of Kirk, McCoy and Spock. The Motion Picture was too "Romantic" in many portrayals of the crew.....they came back classic dialog and acting in the Wrath of Kahn. The Motion Picture served only to re-establish Star Trek onto the Screen. Weak storyline. Many agree with this. Also, Gene Roddenberry never produced another Movie after this. It was Harve Bennett.
What Star Trek 2, 4 ... ( 5 days ago by UFOSPACE1999)
What Star Trek 2, 4, 6 had that Star Trek: The Motion Picture didn't have was HEART!!! Star Trek 2 and 3 was all about friendship and what would u do and how far U would go to help that friend. The First Star Trek was about NOTHING, and ONCE and WE FINALLY GOT there, THERE was nothing for US to see, ONCE we GOT THERE. Harve Bennett PUT some life into Star Trek. He understood what the old star trek tv series was all about. Friends. That simple. STTMP was boring, dull and lifeless.
The Motion Picture ... ( 3 days ago by Mikligard)
The Motion Picture didn't have HEART!!! Bullshit. It capture the spirit of Roddenberry vision perfectly, to explore & seek out new lifeforms(Vger). TMP is a good sci-fi movie
Harve Bennett is overrated TV producer. Star Trek 2 is good but Star Trek 4 is a joke, freaking WHALE movie then Star Trek movie.

Ever notice that Starfleet always had this big fleet of ships but yet everytime some alien race came to wipe Earth out it was always the Enterprise that saved the planet.

Its a great scene, and seems to be influenced by Kubrick's 2001.I always thought the pacing of the first Star Trek film was pretty slow and overreliant on special effects, always a sign of a creaky plot. The film disappointed many people, fans included. I think the second one [The Wrath of Khan] was better and more memorable,it seemed to be a stronger story and better paced out,and maybe had more of the Star Trek ambiance, with Kirk doing a 'Hornblower' and dragging victory out of defeat.

The story of the first one may have been thought "too cerebral" by some viewers. I liked it except for the weird uniforms.

It's funny, for years this was a symbol of how NOT to do a Star Trek film again, and yet, over time, as each film became increasingly militaristic and action-fueled, it's become a symbol of the kind of grace and wonder that's now largely missing from the series. Even the idea that Spock feels a deep empathy for V'ger (the huge "bad guy") seems light years away from how we'd just have to blast the fuck out of it today. I was 11 when this came out and I was not bored!
