Because success within the music world takes more than just skill. I wuold say it's 90% luck. My mate has a band, and they've written some really brilliant songs, far better than a lot of the generic crap that "popular" bands are putting out. But they will almost certainly not get noticed, because they lack the one lucky moment when they get noticed by the right person or whatever.

I wouldn't say its luck either to be honest, I think its down to what sells. You could have a great band with a fresh sound, but if they are just an underground act then record companies are going to chose bands like Panic at the Disco over them all the time. There is a degree of being at in the right place at the right time though.

Music video: John standing on a beach on a small island off the coast of some central or south american country... the wind/water carries his song to a female on the beach of that country or she found the bottle and that sparks him being on the beach which she is imagining him singing it to just her.
