April 1997
The Kruger National Park is 100 years old. Besieged by too many animals, poachers and the social problems of the New South Africa - we explore a park with an awful lot of headaches.
The area between the Crocodile and Sabie rivers was christened the Sabie Game Reserve on March 26th 1898. This reserve expanded into the majestic Kruger Park, which today stretches 350km along South Africa's border with Mozambique. It's named after Paul Kruger, the then President of the Transvaal
Republic and home to the Big Five: elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard, as well as hundreds of other species of animals and birds. The park promotes itself as 'an eco-tourist's dream'. But is it really?
