I am the son of the tour manager of the doobies, and i recently saw mcdonald over in sonoma(?). i have gon on tour with them a lot recently, even for three weeks at a time. I joined them in july from Georgia to Boston. They are probably one of the best bands of the 70's and later. if you havent heard them, listen to laura johnstons (TJ's daughter). Apparently that was not the listener consensus at the time. Sure, there was a change when he came - whether it was for the better or worse is up to the individual - however, I'd say the existence of the band in its present form widely disproves your statement. I'll even go further and say that if Tommy hadn't had his hiatus in the 70s, there would be no Doobies today, McD or no McD, for many reasons.

This song/album ushered in the McDonald-led era of the Doobies. It marked a distinct contrast from the Tom Johnston version of the band. Two very different styles of Doobie Brothers. Both unique, both unforgettable. I feel in love with both. Great reunion in this video, after so many years. DOOBIES FOREVER!
