I disagree with your review on a few points-- namely, your distaste of mages. Their defense is crappy, sure, but they're around to pluck enemies from afar. Besides, once the good ones (read: Soren) are levelled, they dodge a good amount of blows.
I agree about FE's style being divisive-- I'm on the "pro" side. I think it forces the player to be judicious in their decisions. On difficulty, I didn't think it was so hard-- try Radiant Dawn for a grand challenge. All around: good review.

It was the first one I could actually stomach gameplay-wise. I tried playing FE7 and found the complete lack of any kind of home comforts - a decent intermission system, decently scaling difficulty curve, etc. to be a real buzzkill. It wasn't so much that PoR was 'hard' persay as that as an ardent player of less brutal strat-RPGs like Super Robot Taisen, it was very difficult to adjust to an 'I must never let anyone die' mentality, so I kept leaving people defenseless and having to restart.

mages are hard to get up but if you get soren up to a level 20 sage by killing things with low hp and that can't use ranged and only use wind attacks the whole game with soren. at level 20, with s level wind and elwind, soren is a hard person to beat. he can hardly be hit with melee, ranged, or mage attacks. so get him up if you are thinking of playing through again.

I think the review was pretty decent, even though the story is simply epic.
And if you think it was hard then you have yet to play the sequel: Radiant Dawn. This may be the hardest game I have ever beaten.
